Our apartment is located in the north of the Cilento National Park, the area is rich in sights and destinations. We would like to present you with a few selected suggestions for planning your holiday. Starting with the villages in the immediate vicinity. There is certainly much more to discover, we would be happy to advise you on site.

Paestum

The most famous attractions in the Cilento National Park are the archaeological excavations of the Greek temples of Paestum and the ancient Velia. Greek temples majestically dominate the flat coastal landscape. They were built 400 - 500 BC. and are among the best preserved in the world. There is also a museum next to the site of the excavations. Paestum does not have a modern center, it is a district of the small town of Capaccio. At the sea there is a beautiful beach promenade with bars and restaurants. A stroll is a delightful alternative to strolling along the promenade of Agropoli.

Agropoli

Agropoli is the largest town in Cilento with around 22,000 inhabitants. In addition to interesting shopping opportunities, the small town offers a lot to discover. The old town gate from the 16th century leads to the old town, which is definitely worth a visit. At the highest point is the castle, which you can visit for an entrance fee. The "Trentova" bay is a popular bathing destination, it is located on Monte Tresino, the hill that separates Agropoli from Castellabate. There are many hiking trails here. Among other things, you can discover the abandoned village of San Giovanni.

Trentinara

From the terrace of the apartment you can see a place that snakes over the crest of a mountain like a snake. Trenitara is a sleepy little town. There is a historic old town with old sandstone farmhouses and narrow streets. A church has paintings by local artists on display and there is a traditional basket maker where we like to shop. A walk is also worthwhile in the modern part. The view that is offered is worth a visit. The tour is dedicated to the "preta 'ncatenata", a love legend. Trentinara is very well maintained, there are small piazzas, great ice coffees and a great children's playground. The place is rich in flowers and decorations. The village is known for the "volo dell'angelo". This is a flight on a cable car at a height of 400 m at a speed of around 120 km/h.

In winter there is often snow in Trentinara. In the municipality there is a mountain with wonderful walking and hiking trails. There are playgrounds and picnic tables.

Giungano

In the Cilento National Park you can discover many mountain villages where time seems to have stood still. One of my favorite villages is Giungano. It is a small village with three pompous noble palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries. There is a well-known hiking trail where you can discover waterfalls and the remains of Roman buildings. Otherwise, of course, the panorama is wonderful again. In the tour in the lower area of Giungano you can see not only the hilly landscape but also far out to sea. You can clearly see the Gulf of Salerno with the Amalfi Coast and the striking island of Capri.

Castellabate

Probably the most beautiful community in the Cilento National Park is Castellabate. She became known through the film "Welcome to the South", which was shown in German cinemas in 2010. Since then, Castellabate has regularly won awards such as "The 10 most beautiful villages in Italy" in 2019. In summer, bathing tourism abounds on the long beaches, and at Christmas Castellabate is transformed into a magic of Christmas markets and winter events. There is a lot to see. The main town itself, with its narrow streets full of flowers, is worth a visit. There is a castle to visit and a basilica. In the district of Santa Maria, which is on the coast, there is a moated castle, an ancient port and a city park. The long promenade is great for walking. Further south is the district of San Marco, a small fishing village. This houses a spa and boats leave for the small island of Licosa. You can also hike to the island. In a leisurely step you are out and about in nature for about 90 minutes.

Roscigno

The abandoned village inland of the national park is a time capsule. In 1908 the last inhabitants left the village, which was built in the 11th century. Today it is an open-air museum and also houses a small local history museum. It documents country life from more than 100 years ago. In the ruins of the houses you can sometimes still see the remains of a kitchen or a fireplace, as well as a few private items that were left behind. The museum director Giuseppe is famous. He is officially the only resident of Roscigno.

Padula

A day trip to Padula is part of the cultural program in the Cilento National Park. The biggest attraction is of course the gigantic 14th century Charterhouse of San Lorenzo. But the small old town is also worth a visit. There are many small museums in Padula. The most important is the birth house of the policeman "Petrosino". Outside the town center there is a baptistery "San Giovanni in Fonte" from the 5th century. To round off the day you could also visit the nearby stalactite caves of Pertosa.

You can go canoeing, horseback riding, archery, there is a rental of bicycles, electric cars and pedal cars. Guided tours by bus are also offered and events take place regularly. Rocca Cilento

A small typical Cilentan village, which was the seat of government of the national park in the Middle Ages. The castle rises majestically at the highest point and can actually be seen from anywhere in the area. The renovation work was completed in 2022, the medieval castle has now been rebuilt in detail and is currently used as an event location. About 100 people live in Rocca Cilento. There is an old monastery where you can stay overnight. Otherwise you have a beautiful view of the dam and Lake Alento. The small cobbled streets and the sandstone buildings of the houses let the visitor travel back in time. It seems that time stopped here a long time ago.

Salerno

Salerno is a lively coastal city with an important port and capital of our region. Salerno is not only a tip for shopping, but also has a picturesque old town and a mighty cathedral. Above the town lies a castle ruin that deserves a visit. A walk along the promenade and in the city park is recommended. In winter, the city is illuminated in a unique way: "luci di salerno" is known nationally and attracts many visitors.

Pompeii

Easily accessible by train, Pompeii is a popular destination. The excavations extend to about 60 hectares at the foot of Mount Vesuvius and are world famous. A rich Roman trading town once stood here, but was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. From an archaeological point of view, however, this tragedy was a stroke of luck, because the city was preserved and today documents Roman life at that time. The city of Herculaneum, which also fell victim to the eruption, is also very interesting.
